Gainsborough's yearling fetches $300k-plus
Gainsborough Lodge wrote another compelling chapter in its proud bloodstock sales history when selling a Vancouver colt for $320,000 on Day 2 of the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Presented as Lot 513 in Book 1 of the coveted catalogue, the black/brown son of the 2015 Golden Slipper winner possessed one of the most commercial ‘pages’ in the sale and appropriately passed into the hands of an industry icon when Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds outfit came out on top in a keen bidding duel.
The second living foal of Marielle, a winning daughter of Lonhro, the Gainsborough-bred, -reared and -raised youngster boasts sire sensation I Am Invincible in the second remove of his pedigree, in addition to a plethora of black-type winners slightly further back in his lineage.
Now destined to be trained out of the all-conquering stable of Chris Waller as a new addition to the Star Thoroughbreds string of racehorses, the Gainsborough Lodge sales graduate is certain to be afforded every opportunity to emulate all of his many talented relations.
The name of Star Thoroughbreds, of course, is immediately associated with a long line of outstanding racetrack performers over the years, including the likes of Golden Slipper winner Sebring, five-time Group 1 winner Theseo, and the history making racemare Invincibella — all of which are Magic Millions graduates themselves.
Saturday’s feature program on the Gold Coast witnessed Invincibella become the first horse ever to record victories on three consecutive Magic Millions Day programs, and in so doing became the greatest stakes earner sired by the aforementioned thoroughbred breeding phenomenon that is I Am Invincible.
Star Thoroughbreds' determination to purchase the Vancouver-Marielle colt is a significant milestone for Gainsborough Lodge and serves as proof positive that the stud’s sales team, led by its long-serving manager Christine Frohloff, is meeting the highest standards set by one of the most successful syndication companies in Australia.
In addition to selling Lot 513 to Star Thoroughbreds for $320,000, Gainsborough Lodge’s MMGC 2020 participation also witnessed the sale of a Choisir-Summer Song colt (Lot 994) purchased by Group 1 winning trainer Paul Perry for $55,000.
Once again, the Gainsborough graduate could not be in better hands, for it was Perry who mapped-out the extraordinary career of the colt’s sire Choisir.
