Famous Gainsborough colours flying high
The familiar racing colours of Gainsborough Lodge have been carried with great distinction in recent weeks — either side of the Queensland/New South Wales border. In the progressive 5-year-old mare Madam Shazam and the tremendously exciting 3-year-old colt Mansa Musa, the stud is enjoying a wonderful run of success with a couple of gallopers stringing together an impressive sequence of wins.
Madam Shazam recently completed her fourth win in a row winning at Doomben in Brisbane under extraordinary circumstances in mid-September. Ridden well back in a 12-horse field, the daughter of Sebring still had most of her rivals in front of her at the top of the short Doomben straight, yet proceeded to overhaul all of her opposition before claiming victory by more than a length.
Trained at the Gold Coast by Toby Edmonds on behalf of Gainsborough Lodge and some close friends and associates, Madam Shazam went into the Doomben event following wins at Coffs Harbour in April, Murwillumbah in June and the Gold Coast in July. Her 16 starts have now netted six wins and three seconds over distances ranging from 1350m to 1625m.
Mansa Musa made it two-from-two when leading all the way in a 1200m event at Warwick Farm in Sydney last Wednesday. An untapped son of Snitzel, the gifted colt had also scored at Gosford on debut and is yet to be headed in either of his two race starts.
Again raced by Gainsborough Lodge with some close friends and associates, the Gerald Ryan trained Mansa Musa has shown blistering speed on both occasions he’s faced the starter and is now being targeted at the $150,000 Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday, October 20.
The collective six-straight combined victories of Madam Shazam and Mansa Musa have seen racing colours first put on the Australian thoroughbred racing map by dual Group 1 winner Oliver Twist again flying high. Let’s all hope there is still more in store for the duo during the remainder of their current campaign and future preparations down the track.
